The High Altitude zoo in Uttarakhand

One of the biggest attractions and a part of most Uttarakhand packages, the Bharat Ratna Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo Nainital is situated in the hills of Sher ka Danda, around 2 km. from Tallital Bus station. Established in 1984, the zoo is spread over an area of almost 5 hectares. Currently managed by “The Bharat Ratna Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo Management Society Nainital, it was opened to visitors on in 1995.

There are many species of wildlife that you can see at the Nainital Zoo such as Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Martin, Himalayan Civet, Steppe Eagle, Hill Partridge, Tibetan Wolf, Japanese Macaque, Sambar, Barking Dear, Goral, Lady Amherst Pheasant, Silver Pheasant, Khalij Pheasant, Silver Golden Pheasant, Cheer Pheasant, Bornean Fireback Pheasant, Linneated Kalij Pheasant, Edwards Pheasant, White Pea Fowl, Red Jungle Fowl, Leopards, the Royal Bengal Tiger, Rose Ringed Parakeet, Blossom Headed Parakeet and more!

The zoo conserves and protects the diverse wildlife and biodiversity Uttarakhand. Ex-situ conservation of high altitude Himalayan birds and animals which are endemic and endangered is one of the primary functions of the zoo. A lot of rescue and rehabilitation of injured and endangered species is also carried out. They help create awareness about the diverse Himalayan plants and animals and facilitate research and coordinate breeding of endemic and endangered Himalayan fauna.
